Can Generative AI Assist In Journal Article Writing?
Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) is globally known to match the human intelligence in generating or interpreting texts, images or videos. Yet, a serious confusion prevails among the research community as whether they can seek its use to write their research articles or not. Moreover, there is also a belief that the refereed journals deny the publication of AI-aided research article. So, what is the use of Generative AIs in technical article writing? How does the refereed journals see the use of it? What the researchers can do to publish their article being articulated with AI contents in refereed journals?

Scholar’s Perspective on Generative AIs
With the emergence of AI generative tools like, ChatGPT (OpenAI), Trinka AI, Paperpal and many other similar tools, research article writing has become a hassle-free task for the researchers. The main reasons can be stated as follows:
Aids in formulating the research notion
Generates or summarizes the text based on the researchers’ ideology
Edits the research article contents to render improved clarity on the study, devoid of grammatical or language errors
Aids in translating the scientific notion to a non-native English speaker, without change of domain-specific terminologies
Provides references relative to the research with an added facility to change the referencing style as per the journal’s requirement like, APA style, IEEE format etc.
Journal’s Perspective on Generative AIs
Though Generative AIs seem to well-assist research article writing, publishing the resultant article in refereed journals is not always possible. This is because the journals want factual answers on the following interrogations on the article being submitted to it, before publishing the same.
Who takes the credibility of research in the submitted article- The author himself/ herself or the Generative AI? The journals need a confirmation on this fact, as Generative AIs can neither provide intellectual contribution nor respond to review or ethical considerations
Have the data collection procedures, methodology formulations and associated experimental outcomes in the article are properly researched and acknowledged? On failing to provide these details, the journal sees the research article as just a showcase of faked approaches or outcomes from Generative AIs
Do all the references cited in the submitted article exist in the associated literature to ensure the truthiness of research and research integrity? The journal’s do this check, as the articles might hold fictionally or imaginarily created relevant references from the Generative AI models
Does the language and presentation of the article have a proper connection to the research theme with appropriate jargons? The journals check these because the AI models, which are sought to improve the article presentation might also make it as not technically-sound with poor readability issues
Does the article have plagiarized contents with high similarity scores? The journals do a systematic similarity check on the AI-aided articles, as the Generative AI might provide the same, unchanged literature contents, which were used to train it
What can researchers do?
It is evident now that the Generative AIs have both pros and cons associated with it, when it comes to article writing for academic publishing. In the initial years, most refereed journals like, Wiley, Springer, Elsevier, Taylor & Francis and many more journals strictly denied the use of Generative AI in their articles. However, there is a relaxation in recent years, without compromising research integrity or truthfulness. So, in what ways the researchers can use Generative AI in journal article writing?
Never state Generative AI as an author, as the original authors might lose their credibility or role in the presented research
Be transparent on which sections of the article a specific AI tool was employed and never fail to acknowledge its use in the article itself
Avoid fabricating data or results, which have not been truly-experimented
Check the real existence and relevancy of references being provided by the AI tool
Check the presence of contents, which involve plagiarism, irrelevancy or inexistency
